It was nice interviewing model Davita. She has not been in the modeling industry long, but Davita is eager to learn and grow. I can see her doing well with her modeling career. Here is her interview.

Jchell: Where are you from?
Davita: I was born in Greenville Mississippi but raised in West Perrine Miami.

Jchell: Where did you attend high school/college?
Davita: I went to Dillard high in Fort Lauderdale Florida. and Hillcrest in Dallas Texas. I also attended Carrington College where I obtain my Dental Certificate.

Jchell: What are some of your main interests and hobbies?
Davita: My main interest is helping others that would need my help with any ideas I have or knowledge I would share with them. My hobbies are spending time with my daughter and niece although their friends like to tag along and I let them, I have love for teenagers.

Jchell: How long have you been modeling?
Davita: I have been modeling for about a year now.

Jchell: Are you an independent or agency model?
Davita: I am independent.

Jchell: What was it like starting out as a model?
Davita: Scary!! Lol, I was so nervous I actually went to a model call because of a mutual friend was having one and I had to built up the courage to go at first I was like, I’m not as beautiful as the women I’ve met and seen. People have always told me I was beautiful but I had to see for myself, so I took a leap of faith… I really enjoy modeling this is my comfort its therapeutic for me on the runway.

Jchell: Who is your favorite photographer(s)?
Davita: I don’t have one in particular yet.

Jchell: Have you been published in any magazines?
Davita: No.

Jchell: Are you a brand ambassador for any products or clothing line?
Davita: No, I am not, however I am doing my research to do so. Hopefully I can be blessed to do it.

Jchell: Besides modeling, have you done any acting?
Davita: No, but I have thought about it.

Jchell: Let's talk about your beauty regimen. How do you keep your hair and skin looking healthy?
Davita: I use Dr. Blackburn products, I also drink plenty of water and use moisturizers on my skin before bed. As far as my hair, I use all natural products and I do my hair myself.

Jchell: What are your favorite fashion trends you love?
Davita: Ball room gowns, maxi dresses and Dashiki print.

Jchell: Knowing what you know, what advice would you give to other models trying to establish themselves?
Davita: Knowing what I know now try not to listen to what people have to say about other people's hustle as far as how people run their shows, or what designer has their favorite. What I have learned was take their advice (if you want) and find out yourself because what they don’t like you might like. Everyone's spiritual connections are different, you will vibe with different people who has different personalities. Ask questions from different people about the model industry to find your answers. Also know your worth as far as what you want out of this don’t let anyone use you.

Jchell: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Davita: Don’t do every fashion show you would get burnt out really quick unless you want to do shows.

I had the opportunity to interview model La Toyia. She has not been modeling long, but has shown a great interest in the modeling industry. I can see her going far with her modeling career. Want to learn more about La Toyia, here is her interview.

Jchell: Where are you from?
La Toyia: Originally from Chicago and moved to Dallas, TX with my family in 1994. I am pretty much a Texan at this point.

Jchell: Where did you attend high school/college?
La Toyia: Mesquite High School / Class of 2000 and I attended Paul Quinn College in Dallas studying Accounting.

Jchell: What are some of your main interests and hobbies?
La Toyia: READING! I have been an avid reader since I was young and my range of interest fall into self-help, science fiction, urban novels, and so many more. If the book is engaging, then I love it. I believe in working out regularly as well and most of the time I could be found doing numerous activities with my husband and our two daughters 8 and 9.

Jchell: How long have you been modeling?
La Toyia: I have been modeling for 2 ½ years consistently.

Jchell: Are you an independent or agency model?
La Toyia: Independent.

Jchell: What was it like starting out as a model?
La Toyia: Intimidating. I had low self-esteem about my body and did not know if I would been chosen to work in different projects because all the models that I ran across where so pretty and well versed in modeling industry and I felt as if I knew nothing. I stayed quiet, soaked in everything, and learned my style and way. I can confidently say that after 2 years of training and researching I have become more comfortable with modeling and will continue to train to become better at my craft.

Jchell: Who is your favorite photographer(s)?
La Toyia: I have shot with Ebony Botchway (Heavenly Touch Photography), Addison Carey (Easy Street Images), Douglas Fairbanks, and Evette’s Photography but my favorite is with Presley Sheffield (Natural State Images). There has to be a certain level of repore and trust with your photographer and I believe we have developed a great understanding and he has a great eye for catching good angles.

Jchell: Have you been published in any magazines?
La Toyia: My blog under Beautifly & Free has been published in online magazine (SwagHer).

Jchell: Are you a brand ambassador for any products or clothing line?
La Toyia: I’m a Brand Ambassador and Fashion Influencer for Clothing Line (The House Of Antoni Michelle) DollBaby Eyelashes.

Jchell: Besides modeling, have you done any acting?
La Toyia: I acted when I was young, produced, and directed a play I wrote myself but I have been focusing on my modeling lately. I am currently looking into acting opportunities now because I highly believe in getting our stories out our way that relates to the culture so that we all can grow and learn.

Jchell: Let's talk about your beauty regimen.
La Toyia: How do you keep your hair and skin looking healthy? Plenty of water exercise and rest. It seems cliche but I spend massive amounts of time hydrating due to my oily skin and I find that the more water I drink the less oily I appear on camera or on a shoot. I cleanse and moisturize my face daily with non-oil based cleanser and I use a mask about twice a month. I take meticulous care with removing all of my makeup daily and I do not rub my face to harshly so as not to cause premature wrinkles. When I am in the sun for an extended amount of time, I use sunscreen.

Jchell: What are your favorite fashion trends you love?
La Toyia: I love to dress very feminine and the clothes have to fit very well for me to leave the house. I love colorful items and accessories are necessary. Hats, bracelets, sunglasses are my favorite go to and I wear heels with majority of outfits.

Jchell: Knowing what you know, what advice would you give to other models trying to establish themselves?
La Toyia: Be authentic in who you are because there will be many who want to provide advice and you must know your standards before you adopt someone else’s. Do not just attend casting calls and do your research on all upcoming projects someone may want you to participate in. Train and never stop learning and become more active if you have not already. Modeling requires stamina and standing for long periods. Having a strong mind and body will ensure success even when things do not work out you will be able to bounce back quickly because of preparation. Preparation is the KEY!

Jchell: Is there anything else you would like to add?
La Toyia: I am currently focused on my print work that I am doing with Impenitente by Monica Daniels to challenge myself to step out of the box and really push the limit with the art of photography. There will be many projects stemming from that brand/line and I am grateful to be a part of the projects.
Here is a complete list of the projects I have worked on…
  1. The Curvy Elite Plus Size Dancer 2017-2018 (Dancer and Team Secretary)

curvii addiction: become ADDICTED!!

When I first connected with Curvii Addiction, Melinda, the CEO reached out to me to be her models runway coach. Of course I was quite excited to train her beautiful models for an upcoming show. After corresponding with Melinda on numerous occasions and seeing her a couple of times in person, she's very dedicated to her organization and her models. I did not have the opportunity to meet Lakiesha, but she is just as dedicated to Curvii Addiction as her business partner Melinda. Here is their interview.

Jchell: Where are you from?
Melinda: I am from Houston, TX.
Lakiesha: I am from New Orleans, LA.

Jchell: Where did you attend high school/college?
Melinda: I attended Clear Creek High School in League City, TX. and Texas Southern University & the Art Institute.
Lakiesha: I attended Alcee Fortier High School in New Orleans, LA. and I attended Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, LA.

Jchell: What are some of your main interests?
Melinda: Fashion, styling, sewing and designing.
Lakiesha: Fashion my way, crafting, upcycling and using my hands to create new things with whatever I have around me.

Jchell: Let’s talk about Curvii Addition, who thought of the t-shirt line and how long have you and Lakiesha been business partners?
Lakiesha: The t-shirt line was started on several pieces of paper that I kept tearing up and for some reason I kept rewriting and that’s when it hit me that I needed to go back to my spiritual roots and write the vision and make it plain. I had been writing the same thing over and over again for 2 years and then came to Mel and said,“ Hey ok, in a my most comical voice,"look, I want to do this for 2 months because I don't know what I'm doing and fashion isn't my thing, so she said" I will join in with you," I said ok and little did we know the plans that God would have for us. We have been at it for over 2 years.

Jchell: Curvii Addition started off as a t-shirt line. Who or what inspired you and Lakiesha to venture outside of your t-shirt line and start a plus size movement?
Melinda & Lakiesha:  We haven't ventured out, The movement started with the t-shirts when these ladies got together … they made this, Curvii Addiction a movement and a sisterhood.

Jchell: Did you feel there was a need for Curvii Addition to become a plus size movement or did your customers give you the idea?
Melinda & Lakiesha : It actually started off with the “Thyck 13” the first group of ladies that took a chance on us. They saw the BIGGER PICTURE they saw what these tees could possibly do, whose life would be changed when they wore the tee, who it could benefit and how they could put a dent in the plus size industry by representing the REAL curvy woman… the stay at home mom, the nurse, the First Lady, the woman who is broken, hurt and can't tell you why she knows that she should not be overlooked, these tees speak volume for the voiceless … even our supporters and customers suggested that we make this a movement.

Jchell: Since starting Curvii Addition as a plus size movement, how many ladies have joined your organization?
Melinda & Lakiesha: We tell the ladies when they start that this isn't their life and we are open to them advancing in modeling and other things because we are not a modeling agency, so that means that our numbers fluctuate, but we keep our numbers over 35 ladies.

Jchell: Have you and Lakiesha expanded Curvii Addition to other cities besides Houston, TX.? If so, what other cities are affiliated with Curvii Addition?
Melinda: Yes, we have cities and states…. New Orleans, LA., Dallas, TX,  Killeen, TX., Washington D.C., and now Lake Charles, LA.

Jchell: I know that you have models, how many fashion shows have your models participated in?
Melinda: 7 and counting.

Jchell: Essence of Curves had a model search in various cities for models for an upcoming fashion show during the Essence Festival in New Orleans. Is Essence of Curves under the same umbrella as Curvii Addition?
Melinda:  No, it's not EOC is presented by 3p Consultants  and Curvii Addiction is just participating in the EOC event in New Orleans, when the opportunity permits we will be and are networking with 3p Consultants and we have networked with them in the past.

Jchell: Will we see Curvii Addition tees on the runway for the Essence Festival fashion show?
Melinda : Yes.

Jchell: I have a modeling management company and I know working with a lot of women it can be challenging, how do you keep peace within your organization?
Melinda: We keep our faith in God, we as business owners keep all negativity with the business amongst ourselves, now when it comes to the ladies again each woman is an individual… they all have different personalities and we make sure that we can get to the bottom of the situation then it can be rectified. Remember we did say that this is a sisterhood and sisters do fight lol… but in the end they have each other's back, each CA model has a story of her own to tell.

Jchell: Besides Essence of Curves upcoming fashion show, what other events is Curvii Addition involved with?
Melinda & Ladies: The GGT Fashion Show which will be in Dallas, Big Girls Rock 2 Behind the Mask, and Southern Ego by Curvii Addiction.

Jchell: As a female business owner myself, our businesses can keep us on our toes. What encouraging words would you give to another female business owner that may be feeling overwhelmed?
Melinda: Remember why you are in business, Go for your dreams, prefect  the promise of  your brand and foremost keep God first.

Jchell: I want to thank you for your time Melinda and Lakiesha . Is there anything else you would like to add?
Melinda: This isn't about t-shirts … It's a word of advice about self love. Love yourself like no one else can, see yourself like no one else does, be true to yourself like no one else will be. Sometimes you are the only person that you have besides God because the way that society is set up they are set up to be judgmental, they are set up
not knowing how to love because someone or something is different. To the Plus Size Queen you are who God says you are, he knew you in the womb he knew that you would be a great, vibrant, beautiful masterpiece
formed into his image. Valerie Monroe once said "Real beauty isn’t about symmetry or weight or makeup; it’s about looking life right in the face and seeing all ts magnificence reflected in your own."

What a pleasure it was to interview the beautiful model Passion. We have been in shows together and we are both brand ambassadors for True Kouture by Sharon Lipford. I must say she has always been a pleasure to work with. Passion is a very dedicated model and I can see great things happening for her modeling career. Here is her interview.

Jchell: Where are you from?
Passion: I'm from Fort Worth, Texas.

Jchell: Where did you attend high school/college?
Passion: I am currently enrolled in Tarrant County Community College.

Jchell: What are some of your main interests and hobbies?
Passion: I'm a poet. I love writing and performing poetry. I love modeling. Runway and print. I love meeting new and exciting people. I also love to travel and shop.

Jchell: How long have you been modeling?
Passion: I have been modeling for 4 years.

Jchell: Are you an independent or agency model?
Passion: I'm an independent model.

Jchell: What was it like starting out as a model?
Passion: I'm not going to lie. It is hard work but it's worth it.

Jchell: Who is your favorite photographer(s)?
Passion: William Washington, BC Curry, and Craig Brooks.

Jchell: Have you been published in any magazines?
Passion: Yes. I've been published in Curvz, Southern Style, Glow Up, Women Power. Just to name a few magazines.

Jchell: Besides modeling, have you done any acting?
Passion: Yes. I performed in the Vagina Monologue Play.

Jchell: Let's talk about your beauty regimen. How do you keep your hair and skin looking healthy?
Passion: I keep it clean. I use moisturizer for my face and coconut oil for my hair.

Jchell: What are your favorite fashion trends you love?
Passion: Honestly, I love anything with bold colors. I love to stand out.

Jchell: Every girl has a special “can't live without this” in her closet, what's yours?
Passion: My skinny jeans and sundresses.

Jchell: Knowing what you know, what advice would you give to other models trying to establish themselves?
Passion: Always do your research. Practice, practice, practice. Stay committed.

Jchell: Is there anything else you would like to add?
Passion: I just want to inspire young girls and women. You can do anything in life. Work hard and it will happen for you. We're all beautiful within our own right. Never let anyone make you feel less than.
